What You Should Leave at Home Before Travelling Abroad

With half term fast approaching, many families are getting ready to jet off and escape the gloomy UK weather. But packing smart isn’t just about what you bring, it’s about what you leave behind. Some everyday items create more risk than convenience when travelling, and skipping them can save you stress, money, and heartache. If you are planning a getaway now or in the future, here are a few items you might be better off leaving at home.

Jewellery

Jewellery is often valuable and sentimental, which is why you should leave items at home instead of taking them on holiday. This is particularly true for items like engagement rings, which would be devastating to lose. Keep in mind that travel increases the risk of loss, theft, and accidental damage, and items like jewellery can be hard and/or expensive to replace.

Car Keys & Office Fobs

It is easy to grab your main keys when going on holiday, as this is what you do whenever you leave the house, but many of your keys and any office fobs will be useless abroad and take up a lot of space in your pockets/bag. Take off any keys or fobs that you do not need to reduce risk and the impact if you leave your keys somewhere abroad.

High Value Tech You Don’t Need

These days, people often rely on expensive technology throughout the day. While you certainly need to take a phone with you, items like tablets, laptops, and specialist gear can usually be left behind and free up more space. Additionally, items like this are targeted by criminals, so you do not want to risk having them stolen on holiday. Not only this, but a lot of tech can slow down and complicate airport checks.

Full Size Toiletries

Another mistake that people make is bringing full-size toiletries with them. While these might not be worth as much as jewellery or tech or have sentimental value, they can take up a lot of space in your bag, leak easily, and slow down going through airport security. Additionally, these items will be readily available at your destination.

Anything You’d Be Heartbroken to Lose

Finally, you should think about everything you are bringing with you and leave behind anything that you would be heartbroken to lose. Anything that is precious, sentimental, or difficult to replace should be left at home – it is not worth the risk.

If you are planning a getaway anytime soon, make sure you leave behind anything that is valuable or sentimental. Travel brings risk in terms of losing items, theft, and accidental damage, so you need to be smart when it comes to packing.
